The Team

Mr Tim Dudderidge Consultant Urologist prostate cancer expert spire southampton hospital sarum road

Mr Tim Dudderidge MBChB MSc MD FRCS Urol

I am a consultant urological surgeon specialising in Uro-oncology and minimally invasive surgery. In the past 10 years I have focussed on prostate cancer and deliver all forms of treatment within a multi-disciplinary team. I personally undertake MRI-ultrasound fusion biopsy, robotic prostatectomy, HIFU, cryotherapy, HDR brachytherapy, peri rectal spacer insertion and BPH surgery. I also have a busy general urology workload.

I was an early adopter of pre-biopsy multiparametric MRI scans for diagnosis and was Principal Investigator in Southampton for the PROMIS study which established this as the key diagnostic tool for men with high PSA.

I am an expert in MRI guided targeted prostate biopsy (MRI-US fusion) and am one of a handful of surgeons offering both focal ablation and whole gland therapies including robotic prostatectomy, high intensity focused ultrasound and cryotherapy. I am a strong supporter of active surveillance and also work closely with oncologists, supporting them with high dose rate brachytherapy implants. Thus men can be assured that the advice given will tailor their treatment to the risks of the cancer and their own personal circumstances.

During my training I completed fellowships at Imperial College London Hospital NHS Trust and Royal Marsden Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and prior to starting in Southampton, worked as a Consultant at The Royal Marsden Hospital providing bladder, prostate, renal and testicular services.

I am active in cancer research and am leading prostate cancer research trials in Southampton. This included the INDEX study for focal ablation and studies of the ADX bladder assay a non invasive urine test for bladder cancer.

Current studies include the ATLANTA study for men with metastatic disease, the CLIMATE and CHAIROS studies looking at new imaging sequences for MRI and AI in prostate biopsy interpretation

I have presented my own outcome data at national and international urology conferences including European Robotic Urology Symposium where I was awarded a prize for the best presentation. During my time at The Royal Marsden I also performed the first UK series of robotic retroperitoneal lymph node dissections for post chemotherapy testicular cancer patients.

I am enthusiastic about teaching men about the confusing, often conflicting, ideas about prostate cancer testing and treatment. I seek to carefully risk assess men and try to avoid over diagnosis and over treatment.

Working as a founder member of The Focal Therapy Clinic https://www.thefocaltherapyclinic.co.uk/ I have helped to grow the awareness of focal therapy and have patients from all over the UK seeking treatment, delivered in partnership with their local urologists and oncologists.

Mr Werner Struss Consultant Urologist Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Winchester urologist

Mr Werner Struss MD PhD FEBU FECSM

My focus is on prostate cancer screening, advanced prostate cancer diagnostics including utilisation of MRI, transperineal and fusion prostate biopsies as well as minimally invasive focal prostate cancer treatment modalities like high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).

I am also experienced in high dose brachytherapy (HDR) application and administration of peri-rectal spacing agents prior to planned external beam radiotherapy for prostate cancer.

My aim is to convey the need for a balanced cancer care approach that is individualised and most suitable to your needs.

Beyond my specialist interests, my practice includes general urology with the management of common urological conditions that affect both men and women including lower urinary tract symptoms, recurrent urinary tract infections, in addition to penoscrotal conditions like phimosis, hydrocele and epididymal cysts.

I trained at the University of Hamburg Medical School in Germany with placements in Zurich and Guildford. Subsequently, completing my Specialist Urological Training in Hamburg in 2014. In addition, I am a certified fellow of both the European Board of Urology and the European Committee on Sexual Medicine.

Beside my clinical commitments I have strived to maintain a research-based focus, obtaining a Medical Doctorate from the University of Berlin, Charite for research on acute vascular toxicity of chemotherapy in testicular cancer patients and a PhD from the University of Portsmouth for translational medicine in common urologic cancers following my uro-oncological research fellowship at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver in 2018.

Research allows us to better understand the development and progression of disease but also to identify innovative pathways to treat them. This translates into more tailored healthcare for individuals.

To this extent I have published several high impact peer-reviewed manuscripts (list of publications: https://pubmed.ncbi. nlm.nih.gov/?term=werner+struss) and have contributed book chapters on uro-oncological topics. Since 2018 I have worked at the University Hospital of Southampton also becoming an Honorary Senior Lecturer before taking up my senior post at the Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust.

I look forward to working with Tim and his team, trusting that my extensive international experience from working in Germany, Canada and the United Kingdom will add additional value to our goal of progressive service development and expansion going forward.
